Volunteer this year to keep Bridgwater’s canal tidy!

If your new year’s resolution is to volunteer in 2020 then why not join us and help keep Bridgwater’s canal and towpath litter free!

We organises canal cleaning events once a month and are calling for volunteers for our next litter pick on Saturday, January 25 from YMCA George Williams Centre.

Sarah Johnstone, one of our crew members, explained: “Volunteering is so rewarding. I take great pride in seeing the difference we make to the canal after each litter pick. I also really enjoy meeting and talking to our liked-minded volunteers, who are of all ages and from all backgrounds. It’s a really positive experience.

“Volunteering provides so many benefits both mentally and physically. By volunteering with us in 2020 you’ll be helping the environment, meeting new people and making new friends and you’ll be outside in the fresh air exercising by walking the towpath or paddling a kayak or canoe.”

Rage Against Rubbish’s next litter pick will be held on Saturday, January 25 from 9.50am until 12.30pm. It will start from the YMCA in Bridgwater heading towards the docks.

We will paddle and walk towards the docks and collect rubbish from both the waterway and the towpath. We have bin bags, litter pickers and bag hoops for volunteers to use.

We’d also love to see more people on the water. The YMCA supports the litter picks and offer the use of its kayaks, Canadian canoes and life jackets for people to use free of charge.

Sarah added: “We only have one Canadian canoe and single sit in kayaks available now. If people would like to use a kayak or a canoe for our next litter pick, please get in touch via our boat booking form on our website www.rageagainstrubbish.co.uk. People can also just turn up on the day and join us to collect litter from the towpath.

“To entice people further The Purplespoon Café at the YMCA will give each volunteer who attends our litter pick 10% off hot food & hot drinks on January 25. We will hand out a voucher to each person when they sign on to the litter pick. It can be used before and after the event.
