Our team

Jason Winter

Chairman

Jason lives in Bridgwater and works for Bridgwater & Taunton College as the Lead Technician.

He was a founding member of Rage Against Rubbish after noticing the amount of rubbish discarded in the canal while out for a paddle.

This has led to adapting his kayak for maximum litter collection. Something that a kayak was was never designed to do.

Jason has been amazed by the reaction from the volunteers that join us on a regular basis to help with the litter picking both on the water and on the towpath.

In his spare time, he enjoys getting out on the water, looking after his classic cars, walking and playing ball with his dog, Anubis.

Trev Vass

Treasurer

Trev lives in Burnham-on-sea and works at Bridgwater & Taunton College as an electrician.

He was a founding member of Rage Against Rubbish. Trev decided to get involved as litter is a bugbear of his. He hates to see it in and around the canal when he’s kayaking or walking the towpaths. Trev is also our trained first aider for Rage Against Rubbish on each litter pick.

In his spare time, he’s a keen athlete and enjoys running and cycling, and travels Europe during his holidays competing in races.

Sarah Johnstone

Secretary

Sarah lives in Bridgwater and is our secretary. She also handles our social media accounts and website.

The 36-year-old regularly runs along the towpath and enjoys kayaking on the waterway. She is passionate about the environment and litter is one of her pet hates. The mother-of-one especially dislikes seeing cigarette butts and dog poo bags along the canal.

Sarah wants to help make the Bridgwater & Taunton Canal a litter free and pleasant place to be for the whole community.

In her spare time, she enjoys drag racing with her family, camping and walks in the countryside.

Shane Austin

Crew Member

Shane lives near Bridgwater and is an amateur naturalist.

His interest in the natural world, exposes him to the wider issues with litter. So fed up with seeing it Shane decided to do more than just moan, and actually do something about it with regular beach and roadside verge cleans.

Shane noticed that lots of the beach rubbish was from inland, so he purchased a kayak so he could tackle it at the source. He soon realised the scale of the problem and now cleans large sections of the River Tone, in an effort to stop the rubbish from getting to sea.

This led him to joining Rage Against Rubbish for monthly cleans along the canal. Shane explained: “It’s fantastic to see all the regular support both on foot and in the water. It’s encouraging to know there are lots of people who want to make a difference. We need more of that, moaning doesn’t get things done, action does.”

In his spare time, Shane likes to photograph the natural world and expand his knowledge of it.

Dave Porcas

Crew Member

Dave lives in Bridgwater next to the docks. For the past year and a half, he and his two children have been litter picking along Waverley Road near the docks as they were sick of seeing so much mess.

Dave, a keen scuba diver, already carried out ‘Dive Against Debris’ missions and continues to collect debris and litter from the sea every time he dives.

The 34-year-old loves the outdoors, especially time spent around water. He keeps his own large, marine aquarium for his very own slice of the ocean at home. Dave also built his own camper van for trips away and keeps his own allotment growing fresh food for his family.

Ethan Porcas

Crew Member

Ethan is nine-years-old and goes to St Joseph’s Primary School. He started litter picking after noticing so much rubbish when he walked from the town centre to his Dad’s flat, which is located at the docks.

His Dad, Dave, found out about us through social media and the family all got involved in our litter picks including Ethan’s sister Jasmine.

Dave & Ethan are now crew members and help with organising the monthly litter picks.
