We’re delighted to be linking with the Campaign to Protect Rural England’s (CPRE) Green Clean initiative for our next canal litter pick.
After our event on Saturday, September 28 we’ll be counting all the bottles and cans collected with the help of the Inland Waterway Association (IWA) Somerset Volunteers. This will provide the CPRE with evidence to put pressure on the Government that it’s vital we have a deposit return system.
At our previous events plastic bottles, cans and glass bottles make up the majority of the litter we collect. A bottle deposit return system would certainly boost recycling rates and help eradicate litter of this kind in our countryside.
The small financial incentive from the scheme will mean we see less of this rubbish in our green spaces. It has worked in other countries, so why not here?
CPRE has 20 groups in partnership with other community groups and volunteers nationwide. They will clean up green spaces and the countryside as part of its nationwide Green Clean.
Becky Collier, Branch Manager at CPRE Somerset, said: “It’s fantastic to have the support of Rage Against Rubbish and its volunteers to aid us with our Green Clean campaign in Bridgwater.
“Last year, Green Clean litter pickers across the UK collected hundreds of bags of litter. More than 11,000 drinks bottles and cans, of all shapes, sizes and materials. This not only helped to transform green spaces across the country, but also demonstrated that drinks containers of all kinds are left polluting the natural world supporting the need for an ‘all-in’ deposit return system.”
